It's been a little while since I've come across a cafe with the simplistic minimalist beauty of Sprolo. With clean white walls, wooden tables and gorgeous light fittings, Sprolo's insides almost don't match its name. Serving up a tasty Malaysian/Singaporean Breakfast comprised of two sous vide eggs and toast with butter and kaya (coconut jam) and the necessary soy sauce and pepper, the menu also features a more Western take on the beloved mango and coconut sago pudding - only this time without sago and with chia seeds.
I had a house blend flat white and Jason had an ice coffee - one that was strong but smooth and wasn't like most ice coffees where the coffee to water/ice ratio is significantly small. Blacklist coffee roasters share the building with Sprolo, providing the opportunity to sneak peek into their headquarters. The flat white was smooth and aromatic and I wasn't left with a bitter taste after. Not to mention it was beautiful, the kind of coffee and cup that would gladly grace the instafeeds.
The pudding was surprisingly filling, with the coconut cream remaining flavoursome throughout. There were just enough mango pieces to break up the coconut and although not quite resembling the puddings of my childhood, it was still yummy and satisfying.
We were there on a Sunday afternoon and the weekend crowd picked up. That didn't stop the ambiance from being what it was, comfortable and cozy in some places where you could laze the day away with a cup of coffee and a book. It's the perfect place for a catch up with girlfriends, a morning with the boyfriend and even a place to bring your children. Its children's play corner is a little world for the kids to practice their chalk drawing skills or for them to read a book.
Toasties, bagels and other pastries rest near the counter, where you will find your dedicated barristers carefully but expertly making you your drink order. While I was unable to try the chicken rice paper rolls, I will undoubtedly be back soon - if not for the modern and dreamy decor (a photographer's dream) then for the food and Blacklist coffee.
