My grade three teacher first introduced our class to the famous story of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. It is a sad and heart wrenching story of a girl who was diagnosed with leukaemia, as a result of the radiation of the atomic bomb that exploded in 1945 in Hiroshima.
Japanese Folklore states that if one can fold one thousand paper cranes, you will be granted a wish. Sadako set out to fold one thousand. These cranes and cranes folded by others are seen adorning the Peace Memorial in memory of Sadako and of the children and families killed or affected by the atomic bomb of the Second World War.
It is no doubt an important and historical place to visit. On the same note, the way that the city has rebuilt itself since then is an experience in itself.
